BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the return of party chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will help pave the way for a democratic transition in Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday morning, Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia’s homecoming marks a significant moment in the nation’s political landscape.
“Khaleda Zia has endured years of political persecution under the Awami League’s authoritarian rule,” he said. “Following her release from prison, she sought treatment abroad. Her return now signals a new chapter.”
The BNP chief described the day as “a happy and meaningful moment for the people,” adding that her presence would “facilitate the path to democracy and guide the nation toward justice and inclusivity.”
The former prime minister arrived in Dhaka at around 10:30 am on a special air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. She had spent nearly four months in London receiving medical treatment.
Khaleda Zia was accompanied by her two daughters-in-law—Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, and Syeda Sharmila Rahman, wife of the late Arafat Rahman Coco.
Dr Zubaida Rahman returned to Bangladesh for the first time in 17 years, having left the country on 11 September 2008.
Khaleda Zia departed London’s Heathrow Airport at 9:35 pm (Bangladesh time) on Monday. She was seen off by Tarique Rahman and several senior BNP leaders and activists.
