BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday (July 23) said that there is no lack of unity among the forces opposing fascism and that their alliance remains intact.
He made the remark after a meeting with the Nationalist Ethnic Minority Party at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Wednesday morning.
Referring to Tuesday night’s meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul said, “We joined the discussion because the government reached out to us only when it faces a crisis. We are committed to establishing democracy, so we did not back away from the talks.”
He also said that more frequent dialogues could have prevented many of the country’s current political crises. The meeting between the Chief Adviser and the parties that have long struggled against fascism was timely and necessary, he added.
Terming differences of opinion among political parties as natural, the BNP leader said, “Politics is about trying to challenge your opponent and presenting your own position—this is the beauty of politics.”
Fakhrul further noted that in any democratic process, it is normal for some to speak in favour and others against. “This is how democracy flourishes,” he said.
