DOANI, TEESTA BARRAGE: BNP’s long march for due share of Teesta River water reached at the Teesta Barrage at Doani point in Hatibandha of Lalmonithat Wednesday noon.
The party started its concluding rally of the road march there through reciting the verses of Holy Quran., begging few minutes after 12:00pm.
BNP’s Rangpur division organizing secretary, and also Lamonirhat district BNP president, Asadul Habib Dulu is presiding over the rally.
Earlier in the morning, the long march caravan left Rangpur after a short rally at Central Shaeed Minar premises, adjoining to the district Public Library, of the city at 10:00am after a day stay there.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Almagir, at the rally, said, “The long march to Teesta Barrage is our journey to gain rights, a quest for due share of water”.
“This is the march for realizing our fair share of Teesta Water. We are not getting the fair shares of the water, it has been saying that the Teesta treaty will be signed soon, that isn’t being done”, he added.
BNP central leaders including Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, International Affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, Education Affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shamsuzzaman Dulu, Selima Rahman and central and leaders and activist of its associate bodies are thronging the rally ground.
Meanwhile, security measures have been heightened in the Teesta barrage area. Members of police, Ansar, intelligence and mobile courts are patrolling the area to keep situation normal.
At the rally ground, 200 police forces and more than 50 intelligence members remained deployed there.
About one thousand party volunteers, wearing while T-shirt, are working for the rally.
District Superintendent of police TM Mozahedul Islam told banglanews, adequate security measures have been taken to maintain the law and order situation in the whole area.
