Heavy police presence was reported on Sunday morning (August 31) in front of the Jatiya Party’s (JaPa) central headquarters in the capital’s Kakrail area, following recent political unrest.
Law enforcement personnel from Ramna Police Station and Rajarbagh Police Lines were seen stationed at the site early in the morning, and officials confirmed their deployment was indefinite.
"Police officers will remain until further instructions are issued," said Ramna Police Inspector Atikur Rahman.
The heightened security comes in the wake of a violent clash on Friday night (August 29) in front of Al Razi Tower in Bijoynagar, where members of the Jatiya Party and the Gono Odhikar Parishad clashed. The situation escalated rapidly, prompting police and army personnel to intervene with baton charges.
More than 50 people, including Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Nurul Haque Nur, were injured during the incident. The confrontation drew condemnation from multiple political groups, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
On Saturday (August 30), Gono Odhikar Parishad held a protest march at the Bijoynagar water tank intersection. Later that evening, violence erupted again when unidentified individuals attacked the Jatiya Party office in Kakrail, pelting stones, setting parts of the premises ablaze, and injuring several people, including journalists, police officers, and Japa activists. Law enforcement eventually brought the situation under control.
While most nearby businesses and offices remained closed over the weekend due to the public holiday, normal operations resumed on Sunday as the workweek began under a tight security watch.
