No surgery needed now for Nur, next 48-72hr critical: Doctors

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) have said that Gono Odhikar Parishad president and former DUCSU vice president Nurul Haque Nur, who was injured during a police baton charge, does not require immediate surgery for his head injury.

However, they cautioned that the next 48 to 72 hours will be critical in determining his stability.

Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman, director of DMCH, briefed reporters on Saturday (August 30), saying, “It appears that surgery will not be necessary for the injury to his head. But after 48 to 72 hours, we will be able to say how much he is moving towards stability.”

He added that the nasal pack, which had been inserted to stop heavy bleeding from Nur’s nose, has now been removed, and the bleeding has ceased. Nur’s jawbone was fractured in the assault, though doctors expect it will heal naturally.

A six-member medical board, led by senior specialists including the hospital director himself, is overseeing his treatment. Nur is receiving oxygen support and advanced care in the intensive care unit, though officials stressed he was never completely unconscious.

Immediately after the incident on Friday night (August 29) in Bijoynagar — where clashes broke out between Jatiya Party activists and Gono Odhikar Parishad supporters — Nur was rushed to a local hospital. At the time, he suffered severe bleeding from the nose, which was managed with a nasal pack. On doctors’ advice, he was transferred to DMCH around 11 p.m., where he remains under intensive monitoring.

The clashes, which were dispersed by police with force, left at least 50 people injured, including Nur and the party’s general secretary Rashed Khan.
