Jamaat leader killed in clash with cops

SATKHIRA: A leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and four lawmen were injured in a clash between police and Jamaat men at Bhodramkhali High School playground of Kaliganj upazila of the district early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Moulani Ashraful Islam, 45, general secretary of Jamaat Kushalia union unit of the upazila, son of late Adam Ali of Tekra Rahimpur village there.

Ashraful was accused of several cases.

The injured are police constables Kamal, Jabbar, Shafiqul and Asad.

Kaliganj Thana Sub-Inspector Muhsin confirmed the matter to banglanews.

SI Mohsin said acting on tip off that Jamaat leaders were holding a secret meeting, police raid there. Sensing the presence of police, they exploded cocktails and fired bullets. Later, police retaliated with gunshots in self-defense, leaving Asraful and four policemen injured.

Police rushed Asraful to the Upazila Health Complex where doctor declared him dead.

The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
