DHAKA: Ruling Awami League (AL) has decided to give no candidate for the by-poll in Narayanganj 5 constituency, slated for June 26.
The decision came after the AL Parliamentary Board held a meeting on the matter on at held at Ganabhaban on Thursday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also AL president, in the chair.
Finishing the meeting, AL advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu briefed the journalists on the meeting there.
He said that Awami League has decided to leave the seat for JP candidate.
The by-election is scheduled to be held on June 26 whereas the last date for nomination submission is May 29 and securitization of the nomination papers is June 1 while the last date for nomination withdrawal is June 9.
AL had no candidate at the constituency for the January 5 polls where Nasim Osman won the seat under JP ticket, which fell vacant after Nasim died on April 29.
Sources said Nasim’s wife Parvin Osman is the possible runner under the JP banner for the by-polls.
Meanwhile, Santrash Nirmul Mancha convener Rafiur Rabbi, also slain Tanvir Mohammad Towki’s father, collected nomination paper to contest in the by-polls.
