RAJSHAHI: A half-day hartal called by Chhatra Shibir in Rajshahi, Natore and Capainawabganj districts is underway Tuesday protesting the amputation of a Chhatra Shibir leader of Rajshahi University unit.
The Shibir activists tried to bring out possession and barricade the road. But they fled the spot before the arrival of police.
Witnesses said that Shibir men tried to barricade setting ablaze in Actroi Moor area of the city around 6:30 am and vandalize vehicles. But they fled when, being informed, police arrived the spot.
Before that the Shibir activists brought a rally in Debishingpara area of the city around 5:45am.
There was no information of any untoward situation till 8:00am.
No highway buses were moving from Rajshahi. But some local vehicles were seen plying on the road while business establishments kept their shutters down in the morning.
However, the train services remain normal during the hartal.
A large number of policemen have been deployed in the districts to fend off any trouble.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi city Sardar Tamiz Uddin Ahmed said police have been alert from the morning.
Earlier, miscreants cut off the right leg of Russel, secretary of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall unit Chhatra Shibir and a 4th year student of Finance and Banking Department of the university, on the campus on Monday.
