DHAKA: Ruling Awami League’s Dhaka metropolitan unit joint general secretary Haji M Selim, MP, will not participate in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election, scheduled to be held on April 28.
Wishing anonymity, a close aide of Selim confirmed the matter to banglanews on Wednesday morning.
Sources said after the Jatiya Sangsad session on Tuesday (March 24), Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina forbade Selim to take part in the DSCC poll as a mayor contender.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House did not receive his resignation letter from MP post advising the MP not to contend in the mayoral election.
Earlier on March 12, Selim told banglanews he would back out from the polls if the party chief and also Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asks him to do so.
On February 26, in the meeting with Sayeed Khokon, son of late Mohammad Hanif, mayor of the then Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), Sheikh Hasina asked him to take preparations to contend for the DSCC mayoral election.
However, the DCC was bifurcated as Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in 2011.
Selim also was taking preparations for the mayoral run and collected nomination paper but the scenario changed after his Tuesday’s (March 24) meeting with the PM.
