DHAKA: Law enforcers detained at least 138 persons including 40 leaders and activists of BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami in Meherpur, Chittagong, Jessore and Satkhira districts on Saturday.
Banglanews Meherpur correspondent said that police in overnight drives nabbed 27 BNP-Jamaat men from different areas in Meherpur district.
Police super Hamidul Alam told banglanews that they conducted anti-violence drives in the district and detained 27 people.
The detainees will be produced to the court under 151-section, he added.
Meanwhile, Chittagong correspondent said, in nightlong drives police detained 10 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat alliance from different parts of Chittagong district.
Among the detainees, 6 were from Jamaat and four from BNP.
District additional police super (special branch) Muhamamd Naimul Hasan told banglanews that they held the BNP-Jamaat men in accusation of their involvement in creating violence.
According to him, the anti-violence drives will continue in Chittagong.
Moreover, 68 persons, including two BNP and Jamaat activists, were held in Jessore on the day.
Jessore district police control room sources said that the detainees will be produced in court.
In Satkhira, police arrested 33 persons, including a BNP affiliate Krishakdal leader in drives conducted from Friday midnight to Saturday noon.
Confirming the matter to banglanews, Satkhira district police Special Branch officer-in-charge (OC) Sheikh Emdad Hossin said, the arrestees were accused in the cases of creating violence in the district.
