DHAKA: At least 126 persons, including 49 leaders and activists of BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami, were held in Jessore, Satkhira, Gaibandha, Chittagong and Jhenaidah districts on Thursday.
In Jessore, police arrested 71 persons including 27 BNP-Jamaat men in overnight drives in eight upazilas of the district.
District police control room sources said that the arrestees including eight BNP and 19 Jamaat leaders and activists are accused in different cases.
They will be produced before the court, sources added.
In Satkhira, at least 44 persons, including eight activists of BNP-Jamaat, were held in accusation of creating violence in the district. The drives were conducted between Wednesday midnight and Thursday 12:00pm.
Confirming the matter to banglanews, district police Special Branch officer-in-charge (OC) Sheikh Emdad Hossain said that several sabotage cases have been filed against the arrestees in different thanas of the district.
In Gaibandha, police detained 11 persons including two activists of BNP and Jamaat in nightlong drives.
Confirming the matter, Mosharraf Hossain, additional superintendent of Gaibandha police, said that the arrestees were sent to jail through the court on Thursday noon.
Moreover, six BNP-Jamaat men were held on Thursday in accusation of involving in violence in Chittagong.
Among the arrestees, three were from BNP, one from Jamaat and two from its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Mohammad Naimul Hasan, additional police super (Special Branch) of Chittagong district confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Meanwhile, at least six activists of BNP-Jamaat were nabbed apprehending sabotages in Jhenaidah.
Confirming the matter to banglanews, additional police super Hasanuzzaman said that the detainees were sent to jail through the court.
