DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) is going to send warning notices to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia Saturday for breaching the electoral code of conduct during her campaigns in city corporations’ polls.
As per the EC’s instruction, returning officers (RO) of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will send the notices addressing to BNP’s Nayapaltan central office Saturday.
EC sources confirmed the matter to banglanews on Friday night.
The instruction said that Khaleda Zia’s motorcade has interrupting commuters’ movement during her poll campaigning for BNP-backed candidates in DSCC and DNCC. In addition, several people from her motorcade have created untoward incidents.
The BNP chief has apparently violated the code of conduct by holding meetings, rallies during the campaigning.
The EC asked the ROs to bring the matter under Khaleda Zia’s watch on urgent basis as well as inform the update to the commission.
Sources of ROs’ office told banglanews that warning notices for Khaleda Zia have been prepared. The notices containing details about how and where Khaleda violated the electoral code of conduct will be sent to the BNP’s office in the morning.
Khaleda Zia has been campaigning for city polls for six days, seeking support to BNP-backed candidates. During the campaign, her motorcade had also come under attacks for several times allegedly carried out by the supporters of ruling Awami League.
The poll campaigning is scheduled to end on April 26 midnight while the voting will be held on April 28.
