DHAKA: Ruling Awami League (AL) joint secretary general Mahbubul Alam Hanif remarked that BNP is trying to make an issue by boycotting the city corporation polls.
He came up with this opinion at a press conference in AL president Sheikh Hasina’s political office in city’s Dhanmondi area around 1:15pm Tuesday.
Alleging BNP’s quit from mayoral races was preplanned, Hanif said BNP chief Khaleda Zia has pulled out their candidate from city elections to create an issue.
Claiming the polls continued peacefully, the senior AL leader stated that BNP’s allegation is not true.
The ruling party leader also urged people to exercise their franchise in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation Election (DSCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elections.
Earlier in the day, BNP boycotted Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong City Corporations polls raising allegation of massive vote rigging and attacks on their polling agents.
However, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed made the declaration of boycotting the polls in a press conference at its Naya Paltan central office in city.
Earlier, BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam also boycotted the election raising allegation of vote rigging.
