CEC terms polls fair, peaceful

DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said the polls in three city corporations of Dhaka and Chittagong has been held fairly and peacefully except some stray incidents.

The CEC was addressing a post-poll press conference in the city on Tuesday afternoon.

Rakibuddin said that he himself visited several voting centers and did not receive any complaint on poll irregularities.

In Dhaka city, voting has been postponed at three centers while stopped for a while at several centers, the CEC said.

Rakibuddin informed that law enforcing agencies will also remain on poll-duty for one more day.

“It is our big achievement that voting has ended and voters returned home safely,” he claimed.

Elections of three-city corporation polls – Dhaka North and South and Chittagong – were held on Tuesday amid the boycotting by BNP-backed contenders.

Voting started at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any break amid reported sporadic clashes.
