Rajshahi BCL infighting kills 1

RAJSHAHI: A factional clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) left one dead and 10 others injured in Ranirbazar area of the city on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Jiban Sheikh, 22, son of Hossain Sheikh of Rajarhata area of the city, while details of the injured could not be known.

Witnesses said that a grope of BCL activists, led by Rajshahi City College unit president Robin, attacked a clubhouse in Ranibazar area around 10:00pm. They also vandalized there and beat Tusar, son of Boalia Thana Awami League unit president Atikur Rahman Kalu.

At one stage, the followers of Atikur men gathered there and chased Robin’s men, triggering a clash. Both sides hurled brick chips and fired gunshots, leaving Jiban bullet-injured.

Critically injured Jiban rushed to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) where on-duty doctor pronounced him dead around 11:30am.

Boalia Thana inspector (investigation) Mahmudur Rahman of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Mahmudur said that additional police forces had been deployed in the area to avoid further untoward situations.

A case was filed in this connection, the inspector added.
