DHAKA: Police has detained 31 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in Khulna and Gazipur districts till Wednesday morning.
The drives were conducted during last 24 hours till 8:00am, and 31 Jamaat-Shibin men were detained apprehending to create sabotage during nationwide hartal, enforced by Jammat.
Of the detainees, 8 were from Gazipur and 23 from Khulna.
Gazipur’s Special Branch inspector Sirajul Islam told banglanews that police held 4-Jmaat-Shibir men from Sadar Joydebpur Thana, two from Sreepur Thana and Kaliakair Thana each.
Meanwhile, Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) detained 23 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami across the city in the last 24 hours till morning.
KMP’s Special Branch additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Moniruzzaman Mithu told banglanews that of the detainees, 11 were nabbed from Daulatpur Thana, five from Khulna Thana, three from Khanjahan Ali and Sonadanga Thanas each, and one was held from Khalishpur Thana.
All detainees were the ward-level leaders and activists of Jammat, added Mithu.
Jamaat-e-Islami has been observing a 24-hour shutdown since morning protesting the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death sentence to its secretary general Ali Ahsan Mojahid for his crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.
Began at 6:00am, Jamaat’s shutdown, however, will end at 6:00am on Thursday.
