DHAKA: Supreme Court senior lawyer Dr Kamal Hossain said the High Court will decide whether Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya will remain as minister.

He said it while talking to reporters on Friday after attending a ceremony at BRAC Centre in city’s Mohakhali area.

In reply to a query of reporters, Dr Kamal said that the issue of Maya is now pending before the High Court. The High Court will take right decision whether he remain a minister or not.

It is better to wait for the decision of the High Court to get answers the questions, he added.

On June 14, the Appellate Division upheld a lower court verdict sentencing Maya to 13 years in prison in 2008.

After the publication of the verdict on 22 June, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said Maya’s continuing as a minister and an MP goes against the article 66(2) of the constitution as he has been convicted in an offence involving moral turpitude.
