DHAKA: Ruling Awami League-backed coalition ‘Sammilito Ainjibi Parishad’ won 11 out of 14 posts in the election of Bangladesh Bar Council, the licensing and regulatory body for lawyers.
According to the formal declaration of election results, published early Thursday, BNP-supported ‘Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad’ got three posts in the elections, held on August 26 (Wednesday).
After collection of results from 77 polling centers at different bar councils across the country, Bangladesh Bar Council chairman Attorney General Mahbubay Alam announced the results at the council bhaban.
Earlier, non-governmental results showed Sammilito Ainjibi Parishad won in 10 posts while Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad got four.
Winners from general seats of ‘White Panel’ include Amirul Islam, Abdul Baset Majumder, Abdul Matin Khasru, SM Rezaul Karim and ZI Khan Panna, among others.
In group seat, Kazi Nazibulah Hiru, HR Zahid Anwar, M Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury, Parvez Alam Khan, M Yahiya and M Rezaul Karim have been elected.
Winners from ‘Blue Penal’ include Khandker Mahbub Hossain and AM Mahbubuddin Khokan in general seats while Kaimul Huq in group seat.
The election for the country’s largest organization for lawyers is held in every three years.
Earlier, the election was dated for May 20 and rescheduled for May 27 following an appeal.
The election was halted for three months as a writ petition was filed in the High Court challenging the legality of election schedule.
Appellate Division later scheduled the election on August 13 on condition of updating the voter-list. The date was changed to August 26 following another appeal.
