DHAKA: The opposition BNP marked the jail-release day of its chairperson Khaleda Zia’s elder son and party senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman Friday.

Various programmes, including rallies and discussions, were held to observe the day marking Tarique’s release from jail on parole for treatment abroad during the emergency rule.

BNP lawmakers held a discussion at Mahanagar Natyamanch in the city at 11am. The second one was organised at Katabon’s ICMAB auditorium in afternoon.

Besides, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also brought out a rally on the occasion.

Earlier, on 7 September 2007, Tarique was arrested on charges of corruption and misuse of power and sent to jail during the army-backed caretaker government’s rule, when many top politicians and other big wigs were held, including his mother and ex-PM Khaleda Zia and present premier Sheikh Hasina.

Later on 3 September 2008, he was set free on parole and has been in London since for better treatment.
