Nizami’s appeal hearing adjourned till Wednesday

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday adjourned the appeal hearing of condemned war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami till Wednesday (December 2).

Earlier in the day, the defence lawyers of war criminal Matiur Rahman Nizami placed their arguments at the Appellate Division for the second day.

The 4-member appeal bench, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, held the hearing.

The other members include -- Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.

Defence lawyer SM Shahjahan placed arguments in the morning.

Earlier on Monday, he presented arguments for the first day at the Division.

Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, main lawyer of Nizami, is expected to place arguments on legal points at the court on Wednesday.

Attorney general Mahbubey Alam is leading the prosecution.

The prosecution will place its arguments on December 7. Later, the hearing of the case will come to an end through placing counter arguments by the defence party on December 8.

Earlier, submission of documents, including the verdict by the Tribunal, to the Appellate Division started on September 9 and ended on November 25.

Earlier on October 29, three-member International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 consisting of its chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Anwarul Haque and Justice Jahangir Hossain sentenced Nizami to death in a case of crimes against humanity during the country’s war of liberation in 1971.
