DHAKA: A large number of rebel candidates from the ruling Awami League have submitted nomination papers for the forthcoming municipal elections defying the party stance.
AL, under party president Sheikh Hasina’s direct supervision, had finalized the names of their candidates scrutinizing feedback of their grass root party men.
The central leaders met over three days to finalize the candidates for the polls scheduled to be held on December 30.
Many candidates, who were discarded in the primary selection, submitted their nomination papers as independent candidates on December 3, the last date for submitting nomination papers.
After the dead line of the submission, Banglanews24.com’s correspondent contacted 30 municipal electoral areas where there was at least one rebel candidate.
In some cases, more than one rebel candidates have submitted their nomination papers.
Meanwhile, AL has taken a firm stand about the rebel candidates. AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif asked the party people not to violate disciplines.
“Otherwise they will be expelled,” he warned.
December 13 is the last day for the withdrawal of nomination.
Hanif, however, said that some alternative candidates have been installed for strategic reasons.
They will withdraw their candidacy on December 13, he added.
