‘Death penalty only punishment for killing intellectuals’ Attorney General Mahbubey Alam

DHAKA:  Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said he presented strong logical points before the Supreme Court (SC) as it upholds capital punishment of death-row convict Motiur Rahman Nizami for murder, genocide and rape.
 
Terming intellectuals’ killing in 1971 is unpardonable crimes, the top law officer of the country said, ‘Death penalty is the only punishment for the killing of intellectuals. There is no alternative to death penalty’.

The Attorney General made this assertion while talking to reporters after completion of placing state argument against appeal filed by condemned war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami at SC.

Argument placing against appeal filed by Nizami came to an end on Monday, the 10th day of appeal hearing.

The 4-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha heard the argument.

The other members included -- Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.

Earlier on December 2, the lawyers of the war criminal concluded placing their arguments at the Appellate Division of the SC.

However, submission of documents, including the verdict by the Tribunal, to the Appellate Division started on September 9 and ended on November 25.

On October 29, three-member International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 consisting of its chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Anwarul Haque and Justice Jahangir Hossain sentenced Nizami to death in a case of crimes against humanity during the country’s war of liberation in 1971.

The charges include superior responsibility in the war crimes, elimination of Bangali intellectuals at the fag end of the liberation war, complicity in genocide, multiple murders, rapes, tortures of unarmed people, hatching conspiracies, planning and inciting war crimes.
