EC asks ministry not to send sanctions in municipals before polls

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has instructed Ministry of Planning not to send sanctions for any new projects in municipalities that are going into voting.

EC deputy secretary Md Shamsul Islam confirmed the matter banglanews on Monday evening.

The instruction has been delivered to the secretary of planning division, he added.

The EC cited section 25 of the elections (municipalities) code of conduct in the instruction that said no government, non-government or autonomous organizations can send sanctions or lay foundation stones or unveil plaques of development projects before the elections.

Even announcement of new projects is not allowed under the section 25 of the code of conduct.

Section 4 of the code of conduct also prohibits the candidates from giving any sort of donation to any organization within the electoral area.

‘Before the election’ is meant the period of time from EC’s declaration of polls schedule to publication of gazettes with results.

The municipal elections will be held in 234 municipalities on December 30.
