EC seeks assistance over candidates’ safety

Dhaka: Prior to the forthcoming municipal polls, the Election Commission (EC) has sought assistance from home ministry over the security of candidates and implementing the code of conducts of election.

EC secretary Sirajul Islam sent a letter to home ministry secretary Dr Mozammel Haque Khan on Thursday, seeking assistance in upcoming election.

The letter said that this is the first time the municipal election is going to be held under political party banners. Therefore, there is a need to provide security to the candidates in order to ensure a peaceful election environment.

However, the municipal poll will be held 35,000 thousand voting centers in 235 municipal areas. Over 72 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes.

Regarding the letter, Sirajul Islam said that it is already sent.

Moreover, special instructions are given to provide security to female voters and minority groups, he added.
