DHAKA: BNP chief Khaleda Zia has been elected again as chairperson and her son Tarique Rahman as senior vice-chairman for three years without any contest.
BNP standing committee member and also election commission (EC) chairman Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar came up with the announcement in BNP central office in city’s Nayapaltan area Sunday afternoon (March 6).
BNP executive committee member and also its EC member secretary Barrister Aminul Haque and EC member and BNP vice-chairman Harun Al Rashid, among others, were present during the announcement.
The EC chairman said party joint secretaries general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi collected the nomination paper for Khaleda Zia and M Shahjahan collected for Tarique Rahman.
The nominations were submitted to BNP standing committee member and also the returning officer Nazrul Islam Khan on February 4 and filtered on February 5.
Khaleda Zia and his son elected uncontested as none applied for the posts and the two did not withdraw their nominations till Sunday (March 6) which was the last date for it, Sircar added.
However, Sircar declared the election schedule on February 29.
