Dhaka: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alomgir has called upon BNP activists to continue the struggle for restoration of democracy till the final victory is achieved.

He made this call in his welcome address Saturday morning (March 19) in the sixth national council of BNP being held on the premises of Engineers Institute, Bangladesh in city.

Mirza Fakhrul said that due to repressive policy of the present government about 502 BNP leaders and activists embraced martyrdom during last few years.

As many as 223 leaders and activists were abducted. About 4,000 BNP men were grievously injured. Some 75 thousand suffered imprisoned. About 24 thousand cases have been filed making 4 lakh 30 thousand BNP men accused, he mentioned.

He alleged that making terrifying situation that the government recently handed down life term imprisonment to 50 BNP leaders and activists in false cases.

According to him, a huge number of leaders-activists including standing committee member Mirza Abbas, its vice-chairman Abdus Salam Pintu and former minister Lutfozzaman Babar are now in jail.

Besides, Bangla daily ‘Amar Desh’ editor Mahmudur Rahman, journalist leader Shawkat Mahmud, former chairman of Ekushey TV Abdus Salam and citizens’ committee convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna and also a large number people of different opinions are now behind the bar, Mirza Fakhrul said.

He further said the economy of the country is now facing an acute crisis and added that the government to the contrary is misleading the nation by giving false data.

‘In reality the economy is now on the brink of collapse. Boundless fraud in banking sector, plunder of share market and then the recent cyber heist of Taka 800-crore from Bangladesh Bank and looting from ATM booths have worried whole nation, he mentioned.

Abduction, murder and extra-judicial killings have become a regular feature, he alleged and said that human rights are being violated like anything. To keep people behind the bar without trial is now a normal incident.

The law enforcing agencies have lost their confidence of people after the seven murders of Narayanganj and for many other incidents across the country.

He called upon all to get rid of the current situation BNP shall have to be reorganized and added that solidarity, fraternity and fellow feeling should be restored among the BNP men.

It must be taken to a new height. The strategy for restoration of democracy shall be to make the organization stronger for movement and election. He warned the fellow BNP men to check the government intruders within party fold.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, standing committee members Dr. Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Mahbubur Rahman, Tariqul Islam, Brig. Gen. (Rtd) ASM Hannan Shah, Barrister Zamiruddin Sircar, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan and Nazrul islam Khan are present in the council.

The alliance leaders, who are present in the council include Mawlana Abdul Halim of Jamaat–e- Islam, Col. (Rtd) Oli Ahmed, Dr. Redwan Ahmed, Shahadat Hossain Selim of LDP, Shafiul Alom Pradhan and Lutfar Rahman of JAGPA, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Syed Mohammad Ibrahim of Kalyan Party, MM Aminur Rahman, Jebel Rahman Ghani and Golam Mostofa Bhuiya of NAP, Dr. Fariduzzaman Farhad of NPP, Golam Murtuza of NDP, Dr. Mostafizur Rahman Iran of Labor Party, Mufti Md. Wakkas of Jamiat Ulamaye Islam, Ahmed Abdul Kader of Khelafat Majlish and Jatiyo Party leader Mostofa Zamal Haider.

Foreign guests include UK Liberal Democratic Party MP Simon Danczuk, and Chicago city councilor Joseph A Mary.
