Infighting kills AL man in Magura

MAGURA: A ruling Awami League activist was killed and five others, including a councilor, injured in infighting over recently ended union parishad polls at Charjoka village under Sreepur upazila of the district on Monday (April 25).

The name of the deceased was identified as Bablu Sheikh, 35, hailed from the area.

Magura additional police super Tariqul Islam told banglanews Gayespur union AL activists split in two groups, one supporting the party-backed chairman runner Abdul Halim and the other for rebel candidate Yusuf Hossain.

Supporters of Abdul Halim attacked the supporters of Yusuf several times before the polls and vandalized several homes.

Following the matter, Abdul Halim’s supporters attacked Yusuf’s supporters at Charjoka village around 9:30am.

During the time, Yusuf’s supporter Shariful launched at attack over Bablu with a sharp-edged weapon, leaving him dead on the spot, ASP Tariqul Islam added.

He further said the injured were added to Magura Sadar Hospital.

“Shariful and Bablu were cousins. They had a long-standing clash over various familial matters. Rivalry over election was added to that,” he added.

Police forces have been deployed in the area to thwart untoward situation, he added.
