4 shot dead in Jamalpur UP poll clash

JAMALPUR: Four men were shot dead during a clash between two groups centering ongoing Union Parishad (UP) polls in Dewanganj upazila of the district on Saturday (May 28).

The deceased are identified as Ziaur Rahman (36), son of Nur Islam and Nabirul (19), son of Amzad Ali in Kutuberchar village, Abdul Mazid, son of Afzal Hossain and Nur Islam (55), of Sheikhpara village.

A witness Jahangir Alam, Bahadurabad unit ruling Awami League (AL) general secretary, said AL candidate Shakiruzzaman Rakhal tried to snatch the ballot at Khutichar Government Primary School polling center in the morning.

The rival candidate Shahjahan Ali’s agent Ziaur Rahman protested the incident. Suddenly, Shakiruzzaman shot the agent with his own pistol, leaving him dead on the spot.

Later, both party supporters locked into a clash and vandalized the polling center that left police sub inspector (SI) Abdul Hannan and constable Ibrahin critically injured.

Then, police opened fire to control the situation, leaving over 50 people bullet injured.

Among the injured, Nur Islam died while under treatment at Bakshiganj Sadar Hospital. Abdul Mazed and Nabirul died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital in Mymensingh district.
