6th phase UP election Saturday

DHAKA: The sixth phase election of 710 Union Parishads (UPs) will be held on Saturday (June 4) from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

According to the election management branch of Election Commission (EC), there are 3,000 candidates of chairmanship post and around 10,000 for membership position.

A total of 5,000 candidates will compete for reserve seats, the branch said.

However, 25 candidates of AL have been elected without competition.

EC public relations director SM Asaduzzaman said more than one lakh people will enjoy their voting rights Saturday.

At least two lakh force members from RAB, police, BGB and Ansar have been deployed to maintain law and security of the election areas, the EC added.

To prevent the violence during the election, the organization directed the home ministry to remain alert during the election day.

As of, Banshkhali MP Mostafizur Rahman of Chittagong sued for physically assaulting an election officer. Apart from that an ASP and an OC have been suspended.

The commission further said the election in around 4,500 UPs will be held in six phases.
