Tarique awarded 7-yr jail, fined Tk 20-cr

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) on Thursday (July 21) sentenced seven-year imprisonment to BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

The court also fined the BNP leader Tk 20-crore in the case.

An HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain handed down the verdict in the morning in response to the ACC appeal against a lower court verdict that had acquitted Tarique Rahman.

The bench also directed the judicial court to issue arrest warrant against fugitive Tarique Rahman.

Meanwhile, the court, in the same verdict, upheld seven year imprisonment handed down by a judicial court to Gias Uddin Al Mamun, a friend of Tarique Rahman, in the same money laundering case.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain, however, decreased the amount of fine from Tk 40-crore to Tk 20-crore.

The High Court also dismissed the appeal plea submitted by Gias Uddin Al Mamun seeking release from conviction.
