DHAKA: Independent candidates have unofficially won in four municipalities while ruling Awami League (AL)-nominated candidates won three in elections held on Sunday (August 7).
Elections in nine municipalities, including by-poll in one municipality, ended at 4:00pm.
Independent candidates Jahangir Alam won at Sonatala of Bogra, Ashraful Alam at Lohagara of Narail, Mansurul Alam at Domar of Nilphamari and Shahidul Islam at Naria of Shariatpur districts.
Meanwhile, AL-backed candidates won Tajimul Islam at Pirganj of Rangpur, Shahiduzzaman Khan at Ghatail of Tangail and Abdul Wahab at Golachipa of Patuakhali districts.
A total of 18 candidates -- nine from AL, seven from BNP, one each from Jatiya Party and Sammobadi Dal -- competed in the elections for mayoral post. As many as 21 candidates vied independently for this post.
A joint team of 12 platoons Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members and 36 teams of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel are deployed in the polls areas.
