Manabzamin editor gets bail

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) on Wednesday (March 18) granted Bangla daily Manabzamin Editor-in-chief Matiur Rahman Chowdhury a four-week anticipatory bail in a case filed under Digital Security Act.

The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan issued the order after he had submitted a bail petition in connection with the case.

The HC asked him to surrender before the tribunal concerned after expiry of his bail term.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua moved for Matiur Rahman Chowdhury.

On March 10, Md Shifuzzaman Shikhor, the MP of Magura 1 constituency, filed the case against Matiur Rahman Chowdhury and 31 others at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on charge of "publishing false news and circulating it on social media."

According to the case statement, Manabzamin published a report on expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia with false information, without directly mentioning names but implicating several MPs.

On February 22, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had arrested Papia and her husband, along with their accomplices, from the city’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies, and cash.
