Mohammed Nasim’s seat declared vacant

DHAKA:  The parliament secretariat has declared Sirajganj-1 constituency vacant as veteran Awami League leader and also spokesperson of 14-party alliance Mohammed Nasim has recently passed away.

A gazette notification, in this regard, was published on Wednesday, said Senior secretary of cabinet division Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan on Thursday.

According to the notification, the Sirajganj-1 constituency fell vacant on June 13 following the death of member of the parliament of 11th Jaitya Sangsad of Bangladesh Mohammed Nasim.   

As per the constitution, there is compulsion to hold by-elections within 90 days, if any seat of the Jatiya Sangsad falls vacant.   

Therefore, the Election Commission (EC) will have to hold election by September 10.

Former health minister Mohammed Nasim passed on June 13 at the age to 72. After suffering from a stroke, Nasim had been in a "deep coma" since June 5.
