Bangladesh eye winning start in SAFF U-20 Championship

Bangladesh are eyeing a winning start in their SAFF U-20 Championship 2024 campaign against Sri Lanka today at 3:15 pm (BST) at the ANFA Complex in Lalitpur, Nepal.

Sri Lanka had a disappointing start, losing 0-1 to host nation Nepal in the tournament's opening match on Sunday, with forward Nirajan Dhami scoring the decisive goal in the 23rd minute.

A loss today would result in Sri Lanka’s elimination from the tournament, while a win for Bangladesh—three-time runners-up—would secure their spot in the semifinals alongside Nepal, with a game still left to play.

"We’ve come here with the goal of reaching the final and winning the championship. Our first match tomorrow is crucial, and we aim to start strong with a victory," said Bangladesh head coach AKM Maruful Haque after their final training session on Monday.

"We analyzed Sri Lanka’s performance in their match against Nepal, identified their strengths and weaknesses, and have devised a game plan accordingly," Haque added.

Captain and goalkeeper Mehdi Hasan Srabon emphasized the team's readiness, saying, "After 15 days of training, we wrapped up our preparation today. Our focus is on winning this first match, and we’re not underestimating any opponents."

Bangladesh will conclude their Group A campaign against Nepal on Thursday at the same venue and time.
