ACC urged to probe corruption allegations against Shakib

A formal appeal has been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) urging an investigation into allegations of tax evasion and corruption involving Shakib Al Hasan, a former parliamentarian, businessman, and prominent player of the Bangladesh cricket team.

Barrister Milhanur Rahman Naomi filed the appeal on Wednesday (August 28) to the ACC Chairman.

In his submission, Barrister Milhanur alleged that Shakib Al Hasan is directly implicated in several serious offenses, including involvement in stock market scams and gold smuggling. He further claimed that Shakib has evaded taxes amounting to hundreds of crores.

"Shakib's corruption is not confined to his personal actions; he has also used various institutions and the anonymity of his family members to perpetrate these crimes," Barrister Milhanur said, adding: "We possess concrete evidence of Shakib’s involvement in these corrupt activities."

He criticized previous inaction, saying, "No organization has taken action against Shakib due to his political influence. The ACC should be held accountable and explain why no steps have been taken against him despite enough evidence."

Barrister Milhanur further said, "Celebrities are often revered like Sufi saints in our country, but many are deeply involved in corruption. This needs to be addressed."

In his application, Barrister Milhanur mentioned that no one, including celebrities, is above the law, and this principle must be upheld.
