Preparing low turning seaming bobby trap for opposition team as usual team tigers were trapped in own net today at SBNCS at stumps on day one. In a day when 16 wickets tumbled with 240 runs scored tigers are already trailing by 34 runs. If the South African lead approaches 75-80 Bangladesh may even struggle taking the match to day three. Such was the case of the insipid and lackluster performance of Bangladesh playing without Shakib Al Hasan whom Bangladesh failed to provide security.
Batting first after winning the toss Bangladesh was bundled out for a paltry 106 in 41.1 overs. However, veteran Taijul Islam bowling at his usual best (5/49) could restrict the visitors to 140/6. Bangladesh may be thrown out of the test if South Africans can not be restricted to 160-170. Wicket is turning square and will deteriorate as the match progresses. Aside from Shakib Al Hasan episode BCB may have to bear the ignominy for preparing such a poor wicket.
Batting first Bangladesh failed taking advantage of the home condition. Bowled prodigiously from the start. Protean pace duo Wilaan Mulder (3/22) and Kagiso Rabada (3/26) made hay as Bangladesh batsmen looked terribly poor in their application. Most batsmen did not have footwork required for combatting moving deliveries and remained anchored at the wicket. Shadman Islam, Mominul Huq, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton K Das can only blame themselves. Only Mahmudul Hasan Joy (30) showed some fight. The score could reach three figures for some late rallies by Taijul Islam scoring 16 runs. Keshav Maharaj (3/34) exploited the turn the wicket offered.
Young South African batsmen showed a much better fight than Bangladesh as wicket kept seaming and turning. At stumps South Africa reached 140.6 despite of excellent bowling of veteran Taijul (5/49) on a wicket tailor made for him. Bangladesh missed the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan badly. Tonny de Zorgi (30), Ryan Rickelton (27) and Tristan Stubb (23) were the main contributors. South Africa has taken very useful 34 runs lead. A lead of 60-70 will very much determine the fate of the match as batting on this wicket will become increasingly challenging as the match progresses.
Losing yet another test against South Africa after the dismal tour of India will further sink Bangladesh's pride. Bangladesh can only blame themselves for the tight corner they are pushed now.
