Bangladesh will face Afghanistan today (Sept 16) in what could prove to be a defining encounter in the final group-stage match of the Asia Cup, a contest that will either mark a promising new beginning or a premature end to the Tigers' campaign.

After a faltering performance with the bat against Sri Lanka, where the top order collapsed, an unbeaten 86-run partnership between Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain kept Bangladesh in contention.

However, the defeat once again underscored the team's vulnerability when early runs are scarce, placing added pressure on the top order.

All eyes will now turn to skipper Liton Das, who is expected to lead the charge. His commanding half-century against Hong Kong has raised hopes of a solid start at the top of the order.

But Bangladesh's task is far from straightforward. They face one of Asia’s most formidable spin attacks, spearheaded by Rashid Khan. Alongside him are the seasoned Mohammad Nabi, the promising left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad, and rising talent AM Ghazanfar. Together, the quartet poses a significant challenge for Bangladesh’s batting line-up.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, come into the fixture high on confidence. After defeating Pakistan in a recent tri-nation series, they followed up with back-to-back wins over the United Arab Emirates. Their Asia Cup campaign began with a dominant 94-run victory over Hong Kong, further establishing their formidability. With an explosive batting unit that blends power hitting with classical strokeplay, Afghanistan will look to continue their winning momentum.

For Bangladesh, a victory is non-negotiable if they are to progress to the Super Four stage.

Their hopes hinge on a cohesive all-round display — with Liton providing the platform with the bat, and the bowlers delivering a disciplined combined effort of pace and spin.
