Bashundhara Kings suffered their second defeat in four days, losing 1-0 to Dhaka Abahani in the Bangladesh Premier League on Friday (December 20).
Earlier on Wednesday, the defending champions were defeated by Fortis FC in the Federation Cup.
Despite being relatively stronger on paper, the Kings failed to impose their dominance on the field against an Abahani squad without foreign players. This marked Abahani’s first-ever victory over the Kings in Premier League history.
The decisive goal came in the second minute at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla, when Sumon Reza headed in Shahriar Emon’s cross. The Kings had a golden chance to equalize in the 53rd minute, but Abahani goalkeeper Mitul Marma saved Miguel Damascena’s penalty and made several crucial saves throughout the match.
Abahani now sit second in the league table with 9 points from 4 matches, while Mohammedan Sporting Club remain at the top with a perfect 12 points after defeating Police FC 3-1. The Kings are in fourth place with 6 points from 2 wins and 2 losses.
