France staged a remarkable comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg and eliminate Croatia on penalties, securing a spot in the Nations League semi-finals.
After losing 2-0 in Croatia, Didier Deschamps' team dominated the second leg at the Stade de France, scoring twice to force extra time.
The match then went to a dramatic penalty shootout, where France triumphed 5-4.
France goalkeeper Mike Maignan was the hero, saving Martin Baturina’s opening penalty and seeing Franjo Ivanovic miss his attempt.
However, Jules Kounde and Theo Hernandez both missed for France, sending the shootout to sudden death.
Maignan saved Josip Stanisic's penalty, and Dayot Upamecano kept his cool to score the decisive penalty, sending France through.
After a goalless first half, France broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Michael Olise's stunning free-kick.
Despite constant pressure, Croatia, who had reached the 2023 final, were on the brink of advancing until Ousmane Dembele added a second goal to level the tie.
Extra time followed, with Kylian Mbappe missing several chances to win it, but Croatia’s goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic denied him each time.
In the end, Maignan’s penalty saves in the shootout ensured France’s passage to the semi-finals, where they will face Spain.
With the win, France will be placed in World Cup Qualifying Group D alongside Azerbaijan, Iceland, and Ukraine, while Croatia will be in Group L with the Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, and Montenegro.
