Real Madrid suspended from Spanish Cup

DHAKA: Spanish giants Real Madrid were on Friday suspended from the Spanish King's Cup for fielding an ineligible player in their 3-1 win over Cadiz in the first leg of their third round tie on Wednesday night.

The judge appointed by the Spanish FA (RFEF) decided in Cadiz's favour after they had lodged a complaint that Denis Cheryshev should not have played in the game as he was suspended after seeing three yellow cards while playing for Villarreal in the competition last season, Xinhua reported.

Cheryshev played just over 45 minutes of the game and even scored the opening goal of the game, before he was taken off "in good faith," according to Madrid coach Rafael Benitez, when the error of playing him became known.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez on Thursday had alleged his club had not made any error as the player had "not been notified directly" of the suspension.

He also said nobody at Real Madrid knew of the suspension, although the RFEF informed all clubs in the competition of the players who were suspended on July 27 and the rules state it is enough for the RFEF just to notify the club.
