Shakib steps down from MCC World Cricket Committee

DHAKA: Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib al Hasan stepped down from the MCC World Cricket Committee immediately after he had been banned by ICC from all sorts of cricket for two years, with one year that of suspended.

MCC confirmed the matter through a press release.

Mike Gatting, Chairman of the World Cricket committee said; “We are sorry to lose Shakib from the committee, where he has made a great contribution over the last couple of years. As guardians of the Spirit of Cricket we support his resignation and believe this was the right decision.”

The MCC World Cricket committee is an independent body comprised of current and former international cricketers and umpires from across the globe, meeting twice yearly to discuss the prevalent issues in the game.

Shakib joined the MCC World Cricket committee in October 2017, and has subsequently attended meetings in both Sydney and Bengaluru. He was supposed to join the next meeting in Sri Lanka in march next year.

Shakib received the ban after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code of failing to disclose to the ACU or any other concerned authority in full details of any approaches or invitations he had received to engage in corrupt conduct – in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kings XI Punjab on 26 April 2018.

Subject to him satisfying the conditions in respect of the suspended part of the sanction, Shakib will be freed to resume international cricket on October 29, 2020.
