In a low scoring match on a difficult wicket gripping a turning the favorite team of two Bengals Kolkata Knight Riders beating MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings by 10 runs almost ensured its place among top four.
CSK has been shown the exit door from IPL 2020. Batting first KKR could reach a competitive score of 167 for a brave quality innings of RA Tripathi (81). Narine (17) and Cummins (17*) were the only other two bowlers who could defy the penetrative attack of CSK. Bravo (3/37, Sharma 2/25, Curran 2/26 and Thakur 2/28) restricted KKR to 167. CSK was expected to overhaul and win. But accurate bowling and sharp fielding choked CSK to 157/5. The mission 2020 of CSK is over. KKR needs another win perhaps to secure its position among top four.
On a sluggish wicket gripping and turning KKR batsmen struggled to bat. None but Tripathi batted with guts and concentration. 6 of the 11 batsmen could not even reach double figures. Tripathi scored 81 in 51 deliveries striking 8 fours and 3 sixes. Apart from Tripathi Narin scored 17 and Cummins remained not out on 17. Four CSK bowlers bowled exceedingly well exploiting the conditions to the best of their abilities.
At Innings break 168 did not appear an unassailable target for CSK
But wicket became slower. Ball did not come to the bat at all. But that was not an excuse for CSK choked to 157/5 in 20 overs. Only Watson 50) and Rayadu (30) batted with some responsibility. The stage was set for MSD for carrying his team across the rope playing his typical finishing role. But old tiger lost his bit. Possibly this IPL is going to be the end of his chequered career. MS Dhoni fan followers across the glove won’t enjoy him struggling for runs. Let him sign off with a bang in one last match.
