Bangabandhu Test Series: 1st Test
Bangladesh VS West Indies Played at ZACS, Chattogram
Bangladesh 1st Innings 242/5 (Shadman Islam 59, Shakib Al Hasan 39*, Mushfiqur Rahim 38, Liton K Das 34*, Nazmul Hossain Shanto 25, Jomel Warrican 3/58, Kemer Roach 1/ 44)
Winning the toss and batting first on a low slow track having nothing for pacers and spinners West Indies and Bangladesh at stumps of day one of the first test at ZACS, Chattogram looked on even kill.
Bangladesh with half of their wickets fallen reached 242/5. Shakib was batting at 39 and Liton on 33. The surface looks dry. A few puffs of dust were seen emerging in the third session. If Bangladesh manage scoring 350 plus, with four frontline spinners that can create huge challenge for West Indies to create contest. Off course there is lot to play for. West Indies bowlers also bowled well never allowing Bangladeshi batsmen taking much liberty. Shadman was unlucky given out LBW after scoring 59. If he took DRS he could survive as the ball-on-ball tracking was found missing th stumps. Shanto was looking good. But was unfortunately run out. Otherwise Tamim, Mominul and Mushfique fell to good deliveries. Roach cleaned up Tamim. Warrican took 3 wickets for 58 runs.
Bangladesh appeared with four front line spinners – Shakib and Taijul two left arm orthodox bowlers, Mehedy and Nayeem two off spinners. Mustafiz is the lone pacer in the team. With the wicket looking dry and potentially looking like taking turn and keeping low as the game progresses Bangladesh decision looked all right. Luck also favored them as batting on this track in the fourth Innings would be extremely challenging against four quality spinners. Off Course Bowling well West Indies bowlers could restrict Bangladesh to manageable score on day one. If they can restrict Bangladesh first innings below 300 it will be game on.
Bangladesh started cautiously after winning the toss and opting to bat. Shadman was looking good but Tamim was a bit uneasy. Roach had him played on early. Shanto joined Shadman and was stroking well. The 2nd wicket partnership appeared cruising when a brilliant throw by Roach had Shanto short of the ground after scoring 25. Mominul joined Shadman and these two were also looking safe till Warricon got Mominul out for 26 caught by Campbell. The 3rd wicket produced 53 runs. Mushfique and Shadman were looking at ease. Shadman reached 50 and was well set. He was what appeared on ball tracking wrongly adjudged LBW at 59. Conspicuously DRS was not taken. Mushfique should have advised his young mate taking it.
The fall of Shadman brought two senior pros Shakib and Mushfique together. The wicket was playing easy. However, Warrican was bowling brilliantly. WI struck a body blow to Bangladesh when Cornwall at slips took a good low catch off the bowling of Warrican to send home Mushfique after he scored 38. Liton joining Shakib kept the momentum going. At stumps Shakib was batting on 39 and Liton looked fluent at 34. Bangladesh finished at 242/5. Both sides should be satisfied from the days proceeding.
Bangladesh need 350 plus at least and West Indies need restricting Bangladesh below 300. This wicket will become difficult to bat perhaps from third session of day two.
