West Indies - Sri Lanka Test Series
2nd Test at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua ‘
Brief Scorecard at Stumps Day One
West Indies 1st Innings 287/7 in 85 Overs (Kraig Brathwaite 99*, Kayle Mayers 49, Rakheem Cornwall 43, Jason Holder 30, Alzari Joseph 29, Surnaga Lakmal 3/71 )
In a day of fluctuating fortune, we believe both sides can feel happy at stumps of day one. West Indies score of 287/7 is neither huge nor too small. Yet Braithwaite is still there and Rakheem is also looking good. If this partnership continues West Indies would get up to a commanding position. On the other hand, if Sri Lanka manages to wrap up below 350 they will be very much in the match.
West Indies Lakmal striking two early blows created advantage for Sri Lanka. But West Indies captain anchoring the innings kept West Indies in the game. From 2/15 Brathwiate had few significant partnership. First with Mayle Mayers (49), the hero of Chattogram test win against Bangladesh the 71 runs 3rd wicket partnership gave the innings the momentum. Blackwood (18) and Holder (30) also had start but could not kick on. Jashua De Silva also could not stay long. At 6/185 Sri Lanka was looking good. In the meantime, Braithwaite stayed firm at the other end. Alzarri Joseph (29) stayed with him for a while. But the real fight back came from Big Man Rakheem Cornwall (43) with his captain. The two together produced unbroken 65.
It may be noted that West Indies is cashing on the success of the understrength team sent to Bangladesh. Bonner and Rakheem were great in the first test. Braithwaite, Mayers, Joseph and Rakheem have delivered in this test so far. If West Indies gets up to 400 they will be in the driver's seat.
