ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 Australian Reminder: “Never Write Us Off”

Australia 155/3 in 17 Overs (David Warner 65, Aaron Flinch 37, Steve Smith 28*, Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva 2/22, Dasun Sanaka 1 /2 )
Sri Lanka 154/6 (Kusal Perera 35,Charitha Asalanka 35,Bhanuka rajapaksa33, Adam Zampa 2/12, Mitchell Starc 2/27, Pat Cummins 2/34)

Australia Won by 7 Wickets
Player Of The Match: Adam Zampa

A big win of Australia by 7 wickets put Australia to a vantage position in Super 12 with higher run rate . Sri Lanka put into bat scored  target of 154/6 in allotted overs .Australia chased that target comfortably scoring 155/3 with 3 overs to spare.  .The rock star Australian opener David Warner returned to his prolific  form, senior professionals Flinch and Smith looked impressive. Australia earned consecutive wins in T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka were flying high riding on the flamboyance of Kusal Perera (35) and Chrith Asalanka (35).  They treated with Australia’s world class pace attack with disdain till Adam Zampa (2/12) in the middle overs strangled them. Finally Mitchell Starc (2/27) and Pat Cummins (2/37) kept the honest finishing at 155/3 .Sri Lanka perhaps scored 20 runs too less. A costly lapse of the Lankans letting off Warner at 18 made them pay the price as the Aussies hunted the Lankan Lions clinically from there on.

Australia is not among the favorites for T20 World Cup 2021. Their possibilities are not discussed in the same vein as England, India, New Zealand and Pakistan even now. Even then with two wins in two Aussies have quietly moved into contention. Kangaroos can always be a force to reckon with when they dig deep into any global tournament. With a huge 7 wickets win over youthful Sri Lanka Austria has loudly announced.” Never write us off in a global cricket tournament,” True that Australia has never won the world Cup. But telling about quality and experience this team can surprise all winning any global tournament given any sniff.
Points Table;

Sri Lankan’s were belting Australian pacers all over the park when Aaron Flinch inserted them. In a night match in UAE desert there is always a concern of dew. Flinch knew that Sri Lanka relies heavily on their quality spinners .Dew can always cause issues with spinners. But the Lankans almost caused that decision boomerang as Perera (35) and Asalanka (35) attacked Cummins, Starc and Cummins. The first 50 of the Lankan innings was struck off in 35 deliveries .The pair put on 63 in the 2nd wicket partnership in 7.1 overs. Desperate to dislodge them Flinch unleashed his tramp card crafty leggie Adam Zampa and brought back Starc. They delivered. Especially Zampa taking 2/12 strangled young Lankans. They could manage 154/6. In the opinion of the expert commentators was 20 runs too short. With the kind to start they achieved a score of 170 plus was not beyond their reach.

Yet Sri Lanka could make it more difficult if Warner was not let off on 18. Him and Flinch putting together 70 runs first wicket partnership in 6.5 overs set the foundation for the Australian push. Yet Hasaranga created some sensation removing Flinch and Maxwell. But as told above Australians are always dangerous customer given a sniff. They raced to victory target with an eye to NRR hurdling across in 17 overs. In the group of death NRR can be a decider ultimately. Australia has started looking good. A more matured Sri Lanka however, could make it more difficult for Australia.
