DHAKA: All district towns, including metropolitans, have already brought under third generation (3G) network services.
Now, the government has undertaken a plan to expand 3G facilities in upazilas and 2.5G in villages to bring rural people under the digital network.
Post and Telecommunications Ministry is going to implement the project titling ‘Introduction of 3G Technology & Expansion of (2.5G) Network’ to reach high-speed internet services in upazilas and villages.
According to the ministry, 3G-network will be established in all upazila towns, growth centers, large educational institutions and other places under the new project.
Necessary equipments including 1,200 base stations will be set up in district towns to provide high-speed internet services, the ministry sources added.
Some 500 base transceiver stations (BTS) towers will be installed in rural areas to provide 2.5G services. Transmission equipments Internet Protocol (IP) core network of advanced technologies will also be installed to bring the villages under 2.5G services.
Under the project, high-speed package access (HSPA) system will be provided to increase capacity where 3G has already been launched.
The total cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 678 crore.
The project will be implemented from January of 2016 to June of 2017. It will be implemented in all metropolitans, the divisional cities, district and upazila towns and villages of the country.
Regarding the matter, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the project Rezaul Kabir told banglanews that the district towns are now under 3G services, but uapzila towns are yet to bring under the 3G network.
According to the project, 3G facilities will be introduced in upazila level and 2.5G in village level, he added.
The project will play an important role in materializing the government pledge to turn the country into ‘Digital Bangladesh’ as per the ‘Vision 2021’.
He further said social equality, productivity, public services, transparency, accountability, industry and research, creation of employment opportunities, health care and disaster management services will be extended through this project.
