Facebook appoints Bangla translator

DHAKA: Facebook authorities have appointed Bangla translator to filter offensive contents written in Bangla.

The giant social media site took the initiative in response to Bangladesh government’s letter.

State minister for the posts, telecommunications and Information Technology (IT) Tarana Halim informed the journalists about the Facebook decision on Sunday (January 10).

According to her, this effective step of Facebook will enable the social media site to filter the derogatory and offensive status and comments by translating them from Bangla into English.

She further informed the media that due to the language-related problem, it was difficult to block the users who produce offensive contents in Bangla on Facebook.

But the recent two complaints sent to Facebook regarding offensive posts in Bangla changed the stance of the social media site.

Consequently, Facebook appointed a translator, the state minister added.
