India joins BIP Summit

DHAKA: The Chief Minister of India’s Meghalaya Mukul Sangma and an Indian business delegation participated in the Bangladesh Investment & Policy Summit 2016, held in Dhaka on January 24-25.

The High Commission of India to Bangladesh issued a press release on Monday (January 25) regarding the participation.

It said in his inaugural address, Mukul Sangma referred to the complementarities that existed between the economies of the North-East India and Bangladesh.

He also invited investments and collaborations with Bangladesh in regional connectivity through Meghalaya into North Bengal, Bhutan and Nepal.

Mukul Sangma further invited investments in hydroelectricity, sustainable agriculture including innovative use of bamboo, agar, spices and other cash crops and tourism sectors.

Chairman and Founder of the Adani Group of Companies Gautam Adani focused on investment of $ eight-billion in power, ports and other infrastructure areas.

He referred to plans by the Group to invest in setting up a 1,600MW power plant in Bangladesh and another 1,600MW power plant in India for exclusive power supply to Bangladesh.

He also spoke of using the Dhamra deep sea port in Orissa for bilateral trade with Bangladesh under the Coastal Shipping Agreement.

Vice-president of Reliance Group Samir Gupta read out the message of Group’s chief Anil Dhirubhai Ambani.

The message said that the Group proposed to invest $ three-billion in setting up the largest integrated LNG-based combined cycle power plant in Bangladesh with a total capacity of 3,000MW, along with LNG pre-gasification facilities.
