Robi promotes trees on Environment Day

DHAKA: Robi observed the World Environment Day by organizing a session on “Green Dhaka” initiative at the company’s corporate office recently.

Robi employees were urged, in the session, to plant trees to ensure a greener and cleaner environment as well as contributing in combating the adverse impacts of the ongoing climate change phenomenon.

Highlighting the importance of tree plantation, the company organized a photography contest to demonstrate the employees’ passion and love for a greener environment, says a press release.

As per the contest guideline, all participants in the contest had pledged to plant at least one tree by the end of this year.

The winning photographers were recognized with a tree sapling, the release added.

The “Sobuj Dhaka” campaign team members were present at the session to make the Robi officials aware of the looming environmental problems that the city faces for the lack of greenery.

They shared many scientific data during the session to emphasize on their concern.

“Sobuj Dhaka” also enlightened the Robi officials with a number of solutions (i.e. home gardening, roof gardening) to address this situation.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) chief principal officer Brigadier General SMM Saleh; Robi’s chief corporate and people officer Matiul Islam Nowshad; Sobuj Dhaka’s managing director, Rupai Islam and adviser Golam Mostafa Raj were present on the occasion.

With the mission to transform Dhaka into a ‘green’ city, Sobuj Dhaka is working its way towards planting more than 300,000 saplings across all 36 wards under DNCC.

It is also popularizing ‘home gardening’ on a big scale, encouraging apartment dwellers to utilize the space on rooftops, balconies, verandas and corridors for plantation.

DNCC mayor Annisul Huq has graciously endorsed this highly laudable environmental campaign.

As a responsible telecom operator, Robi takes its responsibilities towards the environment very seriously and is always keen to run its operations in an environmentally-friendly way.

The company is gradually making its towers green, by operating them with solar power.

As part of Robi’s commitment to protect and preserve nature, the company regularly encourages its employees to save on electricity usage, be efficient in taking print-outs and has stopped using plastic drinking water cups.
