Two hundred tons of TCB onion spoils

Onions that were imported by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) from Turkey of 200 tons have been dumped due to rotten near the TCB office in the EPZ area of Chattogram.

However, the rotten smell is spreading in the surrounding area.

According to TCB sources, after importing this onion from Turkey remained on the ship for a month at Chattogram port. TCB could not release those onions as the supplier could not submit proper documents on time despite the rules for the release of perishable products urgently. Later, about 200 tons of onions have been destroyed.

Rotten onions were picked and thrown last Wednesday (August 31) night. The market value of these onions is around Tk 50 lakh. TCB claims that the Turkish exporting company should take responsibility, said sources.

TCB Chittagong Regional Office Senior Executive (Head of Office) Jamal Uddin Ahmed said that the rotten onions are separated and are being buried. Bleaching powder is sprinkled to keep the smell from not spreading.

He said there was an agreement with the supplier that only good onions will be kept in the warehouse and the bill would be paid for that tonnage. The government or TCB has not lost single money due to onion spoilage.
